How to use
- Choose the barcode type: EAN-13 and UPC-A for retail products, Code 128 for arbitrary text, ITF-14 for shipping cartons.
- Enter the data. For EAN/UPC/ITF-14 you can leave out the last digit — the check digit is added for you.
- Adjust bar width, height, colours and text, then download PNG or SVG or press “Print”.
FAQ
How is the EAN-13 check digit calculated?
With the GS1 algorithm: going from right to left, digits are multiplied alternately by 3 and 1, the products are added up, and the check digit brings the sum up to the next multiple of 10. For example, the check digit for 400638133393 is 1 (full code 4006381333931).
Can I use a generated EAN-13 to sell products in stores?
You can draw a barcode for any number, but for retail the number must be licensed from GS1 (or your national GS1 organisation). This generator does not issue or register numbers.
Which format should I pick: PNG or SVG?
SVG is a vector format that scales without losing quality — ideal for print and design files. PNG is saved at 3× resolution and is handy for documents and marketplaces.
Why does Code 128 reject some characters?
Code 128 can only encode ASCII characters: Latin letters, digits and common symbols. Accented or non-Latin letters cannot be encoded — use a QR code instead.
Will scanners read my barcode?
Yes, as long as there is enough contrast (dark bars on a light background) and a quiet margin around the code. Many scanners cannot read light bars on a dark background.
