FAQ
Why don’t 20% and 10% discounts add up to 30%?
The second discount is applied to the already reduced price. From $1,000, 20% off leaves $800, and another 10% off leaves $720. You pay 72% of the price, so the total discount is 28%.
How do I find the original price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount/100). For example, $1,530 at 15% off: 1530 / 0.85 = $1,800. Simply adding 15% to $1,530 would be wrong — that gives $1,759.50.
How does rounding work when splitting the bill?
Each person’s share is rounded up to the chosen step (1, 5 or 10) so the bill is fully covered. The extra goes to the tip, and the calculator shows the resulting tip percentage. Without rounding, shares are rounded up to the cent.
Is the tip calculated before or after a discount?
The tip is calculated from whatever you enter as the bill amount. If you want to tip on the full price, enter the amount before the discount.
