Why a multiplier

Adding 20% means keeping the whole number (100%) plus 20%: 120% = 1.2. One multiplication instead of two steps means fewer mistakes, especially in spreadsheets: =A1*1.2.

Successive increases compound

Two 10% increases give +21%, not +20%: 1.1 × 1.1 = 1.21. That is how compound interest and yearly raises work.

FAQ

How do I add 20 percent to a number?

Multiply by 1.2. For example, 5,000 + 20% = 6,000.

How do I add a percentage in Excel or Google Sheets?

Use =A1*(1+B1/100) when B1 holds a plain number, or =A1*(1+B1) when B1 is formatted as a percentage.

If I add 10% and then subtract 10%, do I get the original number?

No: 100 + 10% = 110, and 110 − 10% = 99, because the second percentage is taken from a different base.
