Typical tasks

Price after a 30% discount: price × 0.7. Amount after a 2% fee: amount × 0.98. Net pay after a flat 13% tax: gross × 0.87.

Discounts do not add up

20% off and then another 10% off is 28% off, not 30%: 0.8 × 0.9 = 0.72.

Not the same as removing tax

To get the pre-tax amount from a total that includes 20% tax you cannot subtract 20%: 1,200 − 20% = 960, but the right answer is 1,000. Use the reverse percentage page for that.
